Most image resizing plugins downsize your original image files to some fixed size and you lose the original data forever. We wanted to keep the originals similar to non-destructive editing.

So we built a small free/open-source plugin that tries to solve this by leaving your images as-is and copying a resized version into the cache folder. The image size is determined by the exact size the image is used on your site.

We wanted it to be beautiful, simple, fast, free & open source. There is a Pro version, but the free version is fully usable and does not hard-push upsells.

We got featured in the official WordPress Plugin Directory! Our image renaming plugin neo Rename is now on the list that you see when you add a new plugin to your site 🎉
I was so happy to see this when I did (they don't tell you anything beforehand). My cofounder and I have been working for 3.5 years on this because we held ourselves to an extremely high quality standard (we didn't have AI when we started).

A friend of mine and I have been developing our plugins for 3.5 years (since before the rise of AI).

We woke up one morning to find our WordPress plugin featured in the Plugin Directory. What a happy surprise!

I have some thoughts and wanted to share them. I won't say which plugin it is here, but it's easy to figure out from my profile.

What this means

• When you add a plugin from the Directory, you see us (for the next ~2 weeks)
• We are shown on the wp.org/plugins homepage
• Every day, the order of plugins is randomized. So it might be #1 on one day and #8 on another
• This got us from 70+ installs to 100+ - now the featured plugin with the most active installs! ✅

How we got there

• We applied in the WordPress.org Slack channel #featuredplugins that Nick Hamze started a few months ago
• Never got any feedback about our submission and thought we wouldn't get featured (well, it is what it is)
• Continued to work on updates and helping our users
• At some point just noticed being featured randomly (no notice)
• We'll of course continue providing updates and support to make our users happy! That's the main goal after all.

The WordPress Ecosystem

• It's really great that smaller developers are being supported this way (thanks Nick for starting this!)
• We watched other featured plugins previously not get that many additional installations. But at least it makes starting out a little bit easier and it's a great feeling to get noticed that way!
• The number of active installations is still very, very important for how likely you are to show up in a search in the Plugin Directory. While I think this is a good decision overall, it makes it extremely hard for new plugin developers and it really, really favors old plugins. Some change would be great here.

Our plugin solves problems that would normally require several other plugins, all in one. And each comes with what we think is a clever twist:
- Our image optimization optimizes exactly for the size the image is displayed at in the frontend. It also leaves the original file on the site, so you can still serve a larger version without it suddenly becoming blurry (which would happen with others).
- Our alt text AI generator lets you generate alt texts for images with AI (300/month free) and takes into account the context of the website where the image is used.
- Our image renamer searches the entire database for references after renaming so that no usage of the image breaks. Our image replacer does the same.
- Our own media library shows you for each image whether and on which pages each image is used
- Our drawing and animation tool lets you edit images directly in WordPress (for example quickly add a red arrow) without having to download them. All directly in WordPress.

You know this moment when client site is almost done and then you see many images still have no alt text?

This is one reason why we made neo Alt.

I'm Paul from neo WP. With the plugin I can filter the empty ones and generate the text directly in the table. For more images there is also bulk generation.

We started developing a plugin for this pain and then we quickly found that there are lots of other annoying problems regarding media in WP. So we solved those as well and published it as a whole bundle!
(b) Optimizing images in WP for SEO & speed, renaming, replacing, and seeing where you still have left your images which happens quickly in WP (you lose track)
(c) Doing everything imaginable in regards to media in WordPress

It started very small. Out of pure personal need we planned a two week coding session to fix the most annoying media pain points in WordPress.
Then: Three years full time until the first release. Oof.

Our goal: high quality media plugins for WP that make managing media even easier than in the file explorer. Rename images, replace and optimize them. Create and animate drawings. And also a list that finally shows in which posts an image is used should be included.
We code every day to perfect these tools and make them ever smarter.

AI makes it hard to demonstrate the value in having a really solid and thought-through software.

We are currently #2 for the search "image rename" in the wp.org Plugin Directory, where most of our customers are. We hope to gain some traction.

We talked to lots of WP agencies, of which many loved the plugin (others didn't, but that's OK). We're looking forward to getting to know more of our customers.

Also, we managed to rank #1 for "wp move image out of date folder" on Google because that's also a problem the plugin solves

We need your help. What did we do wrong?

A buddy and I have been developing WP plugins for 3 years. No one wants them.

• Basically no active installations on wp.org (fewer than 10)

• Basically no downloads on our homepage

We believe that our plugin should get some downloads because:

• It's the best one from a technical standpoint (replaces in the whole DB and not just some tables)

• Our SEO ranking is excellent

• We did some social media marketing (e.g. posts on Reddit)

• We think there is a need for better image management in WP

• There are sooo many WP installations in the world. Even 0.1% is a lot.

So clearly, some belief of ours is wrong.

• No one cares about the technical view?

• No one searches for WP plugins on Google?

• AI doomed us 🧨

• No one needs an image renaming plugin for WP?

We don't get it, but would like to. Maybe an external perspective can open our eyes.

Why does no one download our plugin? Should we flush our plugin down the 🚽?

Hey developers! I'm looking for feedback on a plugin I've been building with a colleague for a long time.

It's an image renaming plugin that replaces image references in the whole database. Most plugins can only do that in some database tables. This one finds everything, everywhere.

It also has a bulk renaming mode built in.

Something that I just think is quite cool: When you enter an emoji as the filename, it automatically replaces it with the emoji description in the resulting filename.

Wanted to share what I've been working on with my colleague for the last three years full-time. A WordPress plugin series for media plugins! The first one is neo Rename, for renaming images. Yes, there are still people developing WordPress plugins. No, it's not vibe coded.

A few things that make neo Rename stand out:
