Create Claude API Key: Guide for WordPress and Anthropic API Integration

For Claude features in WordPress, automations, or your own applications you need an API key from the Anthropic Console. This key is not the same as a Claude Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise subscription: the API is billed separately through your Anthropic API account.

This guide shows how to create a Claude API key: sign in, open Get API Key in the dashboard, create a key, copy the one-time visible key, paste it into WordPress, then check balance and limits.

Short & to the point

  1. Open Claude Console: Go to console.anthropic.com and sign in.
  2. Click Get API Key: In the Anthropic dashboard the Get API Key button takes you directly to key creation.
  3. Fill Create API key: Give a unique name, for example wordpress-production, neoai-live or clientproject-staging.
  4. Copy API Key: Copy the key in the Save your API key dialog immediately. Afterwards it will not be shown in full again.
  5. Paste into WordPress: Enter the key only in the backend, in a server configuration, or in a protected plugin field.
  6. Open Add funds: For production use add funds and set a low cost limit.

1. Sign in to the Anthropic Console

Open the Anthropic Console at console.anthropic.com. If you already have an Anthropic account sign in. New users create an account first and verify required details.

Important: The Claude chat interface and the Claude API are separate areas. For a WordPress integration you need the Console or the API dashboard, not just a chat subscription.

After signing in you land in the Anthropic Console where API keys, billing and usage are managed.

2. Create an API key in the dashboard

In the Anthropic Dashboard you will find the entry to create a key directly via Get API Key. This button opens the flow to create a new Claude API key.

If you run multiple projects or client sites use clear names and create separate keys per site or environment. This makes it easier to disable or replace individual integrations.

3. Fill the Create API key dialog

In the Create API key dialog give a descriptive name. Useful names reveal the environment and purpose, for example website-live, neoai-wordpress or client-staging.

Do not create single-use keys for all projects. Separate keys make revoking an API key, troubleshooting and cost control much easier.

A distinct key name helps you later find the right WordPress site or integration.

4. Save your API key: Copy key immediately

After creation Anthropic shows the new API key in the dialog Save your API key. Copy it immediately and store it securely, for example in a password manager or directly in the protected settings field of your WP plugin.

The full key will not be shown again. If you close this window without copying the key you must create a new Claude API key.

Copy the API key right away. Do not share it in chats, screenshots, or other public places.

5. Paste Claude API key into WordPress

Then paste the Claude API key into your WordPress plugin, for example into a protected backend field of neoAI or in the server configuration of your own integration.

Pay attention to the following points:

  • Do not store publicly: Do not put API keys in theme files, GitHub repositories, or frontend code.
  • Separate per environment: Live, staging, and tests should use separate keys.
  • Test the connection: Start with a small test request before automatic workflows become active.

6. Add funds: Open Add funds

For API usage billing must be set up in the Anthropic account. Go back to the dashboard and open Add funds, to top up credit for API requests.

A Claude chat subscription does not replace this API credit.

7. Choose amount and control costs

In the top-up popup choose the desired amount and confirm the payment. For tests start deliberately low and increase the credit only when the integration runs stably.

Also set a spend limit or check the limits in the console. This is especially important if WordPress processes content automatically, multiple users have access, or background jobs regularly trigger API requests.

Common mistakes after creating the Anthropic API key

  • Key not copied: If the dialog was closed a new key must be created.
  • Billing missing: Without API credit or active billing usage can fail.
  • Confusing chat subscription: Claude Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise does not automatically include API credit.
  • Key implemented in the frontend: Browser code is visible. API requests should go through the server.
  • No limit set: Automatic WordPress workflows can otherwise incur unexpected costs.
  • Wrong key in the wrong project: Clear names make rotation and debugging easier.
