neo Rename was selected by WordPress.org as a Featured Plugin in the official WordPress Plugin Directory. That placed our Media Renamer among a selection of eight plugins that WordPress.org highlights for two weeks each as part of its Featured program.
We are very pleased. The selection matches the goal with which we developed neo Rename from the start: to build a WordPress plugin that works cleanly on a technical level, is reliable, and feels good in daily use.

The WordPress Plugin Directory includes tens of thousands of freely available plugins. The Featured Plugins Program regularly highlights a small selection of newer plugins from that pool.
WordPress.org selects eight plugins for a period of two weeks. These appear in the "Featured Plugins" area of the official Plugin Directory. The Featured section is also visible within WordPress when administrators search for and install new plugins.
The selection is based on published criteria. On the technical side this includes readable and consistent code, proper handling of security-relevant WordPress mechanisms, and a well-thought-out plugin structure. The description in the Plugin Directory should also accurately reflect what a plugin actually does.
In addition comes concrete usefulness. A Featured Plugin should solve a recognizable problem and offer WordPress users a function that has a real use case.
The work behind the plugin also plays a role. WordPress.org explicitly names developer responsiveness in support and a user interface that shows care in implementation as criteria.
WordPress.org does not call the selection a certification or a permanent seal of quality. Still, these exact criteria are why the selection means a lot to us. Three years of development before the first release
The story behind neo Rename began long before the plugin was published in the WordPress Plugin Directory.
The idea for neo WP and neo Rename originated in 2023. Initially a two-week coding session was planned. We wanted to solve some of the things that kept bothering us when working with media in WordPress.
Two weeks turned into three years of full-time development until the first release.
That explains pretty well how we approach software. During development there were repeatedly moments where a quick solution would have been possible. We often chose not to take it and instead kept working on the solution we would be satisfied with in the long run.
For a plugin like neo Rename that is especially important. Renaming a media file sounds like a small task at first. On a mature WordPress site, posts, custom fields, page builder content, and other database references can be linked to that file. The new filename is only the visible part of the change.
From the start neo Rename was therefore designed not just to rename media. The plugin searches for the related references in WordPress and updates them as well. Changes can be reviewed beforehand, multiple media items can be processed in batches, and renames can be undone.
neo Rename can now also use AI to generate filenames, image titles, and alt texts. Both the image content and the site context can be taken into account.
Our quality standards at neo WP
Many of the criteria WordPress.org names for the Featured selection have been part of our own development principles from the beginning.
Development and compatibility
Code quality starts with us during development. Pair programming is part of our development process. We test new versions ourselves and additionally with a selected group of experienced WordPress users on different systems.
We make sure our plugins only run code where it is actually needed. Equally important to us is that an uninstallation stays clean and a plugin does not leave unnecessary residues in the file system or database.
With new WordPress versions, compatibility is part of our ongoing development. Updates to neo Rename therefore appear not only when a new feature is finished. A large part of the work goes into improvements, compatibility, stability and small details that ideally no one notices because they simply work.
Support and shared system
Support also belongs to the product for us. Direct contact with users often shows us very quickly where a workflow is still unnecessarily complicated or where a feature is used in everyday life differently than originally intended.
This demand for quality does not apply only to neo Rename. neo WP develops a family of specialized Media Plugins for WordPress. These include tools for media management, image SEO, replacing and optimizing media as well as creative applications around drawings and animations.
Our goal is to tune these tools technically to each other so that in the long term they form a consistent system for working with media in WordPress.
neo Rename is part of a larger project
neo Rename was one of the first ideas behind neo WP. In the meantime this has grown into much more.
We develop specialized WordPress media plugins that each solve a specific problem and at the same time are intended to work together. For us it is not about releasing as many features as possible in as short a time as possible.
We want to build tools we can also rely on in our own WordPress projects.
That influences many decisions that are hardly visible from the outside: How is data stored? What happens after an uninstallation? Which parts of the plugin are loaded on which page? What happens to references when a media file is changed? How can a change be undone?
Especially with WordPress, where plugins can run on production websites for years, such questions are at least as important to us as the next visible feature.
Development of neo Rename began in 2023. Since then the plugin has been continuously expanded, tested and adapted to new WordPress versions.
The featured selection is a nice milestone in this development for us. neo Rename will continue to be developed afterwards just as consistently as before.

The featured placement itself is set for two weeks. Our work on neo Rename and the entire neoUniverse of course is not.
This includes regular updates, testing with new WordPress versions, and continued work on existing features. Feedback from WordPress support and users continues to feed directly into our priorities.
Our claim can be summed up fairly simply: a neo WP plugin should be quick to use, work reliably, and be technically clean under the surface.
